Most people have no problem telling you what they hate. But ask them what they love and they get tongue-tied.

One thing I love is positive psychology, which is the science of human flourishing and the art of optimal functioning.

Much more than a smiley face Positive psychology is about finding what matters and what works in life, building character and virtue, and boosting well-being for ourselves, our communities, and our organisations.

Here are some of the tools that positive psychology gives us:

Discovering and applying our signature strengths, the natural gifts and talents that make us who we are and let us do our best.

For example, we can take a free online test to find out our top strengths and then use them more often in our daily tasks.

Expressing gratitude, the recognition of what is valuable and meaningful in our life, can make us happier, less stressed, and more connected.

We can express gratitude by writing down three things we are thankful for each day, saying thanks to someone who has helped us, or keeping a gratitude journal.

Developing optimism, the belief that good things will happen in the future.

Optimism can increase our resilience, motivation, and self-esteem.

We can develop optimism by challenging negative thoughts, visualising positive outcomes, and setting realistic goals.

Entering flow, the state of being totally absorbed and involved in an activity that challenges our skills and abilities.

Flow can boost our creativity, productivity, and enjoyment. We can enter flow by finding activities that match our interests and skills, getting clear and immediate feedback, and removing distractions.

Seeking meaning, the feeling of being part of and aligned with our highest values.

Meaning can give us direction, motivation, and fulfillment.

We can seek meaning by exploring our values and passions, contributing to a cause or community, or creating a personal mission statement.
