Heroes as a Powerful Psychological Resource
Heroes have been a part of human culture for centuries, and they continue to play a significant role in our lives. According to a Psychology Today article, social scientists who study heroism have identified at least 12 functions of heroes 1. These functions include providing hope, energy, development, healing, wisdom, morality, safety and protection, positive emotions, meaning and purpose, social connection and reduced loneliness, personal goals achievement, and societal goals achievement 1. Heroes offer benefits that span many dimensions of human well-being. They help us physically, emotionally, socially, and spiritually. Just thinking about our heroes helps us become our best selves 1.
A Psychology Today article also states that heroes serve many psychological functions such as enhancing motivation, hope, and morality 2. Having a hero can increase one’s sense of power 2. Heroes elevate us emotionally; they heal our psychological ills; they build connections between people; they encourage us to transform ourselves for the better; and they call us to become heroes and help others 3. In addition to these benefits, heroes can also provide a sense of identity and purpose. They can help us understand who we are and what we stand for. They can inspire us to take action and make a difference in the world.
Heroes can also be a source of inspiration for children. According to Verywell Mind , children who have heroes are more likely to exhibit prosocial behavior such as helping others and sharing. They are also more likely to be resilient in the face of adversity.
In conclusion, heroes provide a wide range of benefits that can help individuals and society as a whole. They inspire us to be better versions of ourselves and help us navigate through life’s challenges. By understanding the many functions of heroes, we can appreciate their importance in our lives and strive to become heroes ourselves.
